I got hold of a Meta Quest around the time that I started working on my Master Thesis in 2019.
This coincided with the start of the COVID lockdown and was my first real contact with VR, previous attempts, a Google Cardboard and one of those shopping centre roller coaster experiences, had left me a little unimpressed.
This time around, the newfound free time and the inability to go anywhere beyond the four walls of my student flat made the potential of VR as a medium click almost instantaneously.
Over the next year I developed many different prototypes that allowed me to really explore this new technology before I eventually landed on Livro in early 2021.
AR mode enabled via passthrough cameras
Multiple books open at the same time
My goal with Livro was to bring the real-life physically you get from interacting with print media into the digital world.
To me, there's more to a book than the images and words printed on its pages, I think most people would agree that reading a pdf on a tablet or computer monitor is not quite the same, and with VR we can help bridge that gap.
Livro was developed using Unity3D and the Oculus Integration SDK. It supports .pdf, .cbz and .zip files and implements the Google Drive API so users can easily download their files.
All of the spatial UI was implemented from scratch to better support hand-tracked interactions (like button presses and sliders), the rendering was implemented via an 2D SDF library called Shapes.
